5 Facts To Know About Costa Rica Before You Visit

These five facts offer a deeper look into what makes Costa Rica—and your stay at Sendero Hotel—truly extraordinary.

This past September 15th, Costa Rica celebrated 203 years of independence! In honor of this significant day, we’d like to share some incredible facts about this beautiful country that you may not have known. Though small in size, Costa Rica is filled with wonders, culture, and natural beauty. In the spirit of celebration, here are five fascinating facts to deepen your connection with Costa Rica during your stay at Sendero Hotel in Nosara.

1. Costa Rica Has No Army
Costa Rica is known around the world for its Pura Vida lifestyle and peaceful atmosphere, which naturally extends into its democratic decisions. After a grueling 44-day civil war in 1948, Costa Rica made a historic move to abolish its army. To this day, the country stands behind its commitment to democracy and peace, ruling with no military.

Instead, Costa Rica reallocated its funds toward developing its citizens and resources through education, healthcare, and environmental conservation.

2. The Biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula
Despite spanning only 0.03% of the Earth’s surface, Costa Rica holds an astonishing 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Even more remarkable, approximately 2.5% of the planet’s biodiversity can be found within Costa Rica’s southwestern gem, the Osa Peninsula.

This small region, home to Corcovado National Park, has been described by National Geographic as “the most biologically intense place in the world!” It’s an ecological treasure, preserving ecosystems like primary rainforests, mangrove swamps, cloud forests, and untouched beaches.

3. Home to One of the Blue Zones of the World
Costa Rica is home to one of five original Blue Zones, regions known for their populations living longer, healthier lives. The Nicoya Peninsula, where our luxury boutique Sendero Hotel is located, boasts a lifestyle of vitality and longevity.

At Sendero, we honor the principles of the Blue Zone by creating an environment that blends wellness, tranquility, and the natural beauty of Nosara, allowing our guests to rejuvenate both body and spirit.

4. Costa Rica Has Two Seasons, Rain or Shine
While other travel destinations experience multiple seasons, Costa Rica enjoys the beauty of just two: the rainy season and the dry season. At Sendero Hotel, we like to call them the green season and the sunshine season.

From December to April, visitors flock to Nosara’s pristine beaches, like Playa Guiones, for the waves, pure sunshine and holistic experiences. During the green season from May to November, you can watch the rainforest come to life as the rains rejuvenate the land.

5. Turtle Arribada Phenomenon at Ostional Wildlife Refuge
Just 30 minutes north of Sendero Hotel lies the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest sea turtle nesting sites in the world. Here, thousands of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles take part in the arribada (mass arrival) phenomenon, laying their eggs en masse.

This incredible event draws eco-tourists from around the globe, making it one of Costa Rica’s most remarkable natural spectacles.
