Tour the Sea Turtle Refuge

Nosara forms part of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, which means it’s heavily protected to ensure its amazing wildlife is preserved and can continue to thrive. From June to December each year, the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge is the second largest nesting site in the world for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. During this time, there is a phenomenon known as an “arribada,” where tens of thousands of sea turtles come ashore all at once, usually during the last quarter moon phase or just before the new moon. Hit the trails
Nosara’s commitment to conserving its natural beauty involves the creation of a network of trails that cover 18 kilometers of land. Not only does this mean a great portion of Nosara will be kept untouched, but it also serves as the best way to walk through the town. These trails, known as the Senderos de Nosara, are located in the Playas de Nosara, the Nosara Civic Association (NCA) parklands, and the Guiones and Pelada areas of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. The trails can be accessed by cyclists and pedestrians, providing breathtaking views of the ocean, dense jungle, and mangroves.

Nosara Wildlife Refuge (now also known as IAR Costa Rica) is a great place to experience up close all of the wildlife Nosara has to offer. At the refuge professional veterinarians provide help for injured animals, and visitors can learn about the different species living in the area.
