Our quiet surf town buzzes with music, dancing, food, and pride as locals celebrate Guanacaste Day, one of Costa Rica’s most meaningful national holidays.

Also known as Día de la Anexión del Partido de Nicoya, this day marks the moment in 1824 when the people of the Nicoya region chose to become part of Costa Rica instead of Nicaragua. It wasn’t just a political decision; it was a vote for peace, stability, and closer cultural ties with Costa Rica.

Today, Guanacaste Day is a celebration of that choice and everything that makes this region so unique. Here in Nosara, the day is full of energy, especially at local schools, where students practice for weeks leading up to the event. You’ll see traditional dances like the Punto Guanacasteco performed in full costume, parades through town with proud cowboys (sabaneros) on horseback, and kids dressed in the blue, white, and red of the Costa Rican flag.

Music plays a big part too, especially the cheerful sounds of marimba, Costa Rica’s national instrument. As the rhythms float through the air, you’ll see the whole town get into the spirit.

And then there’s the food. Like any good celebration, Guanacaste Day is centered around the table. Throughout town, you’ll find people selling homemade rosquillas (cornmeal cookies), tamal asado, chorreadas (corn pancakes), fresh tortillas, and cajetas (sweet milk-based treats). These traditional Guanacastecan dishes are simple, comforting, and full of local flavor.
