Guanacaste Day: Nosara’s Biggest Local Celebration

Every July 25th, Nosara comes alive.

Our quiet surf town buzzes with music, dancing, food, and pride. On this day, locals celebrate Guanacaste Day, which is one of Costa Rica’s most important national holidays.

Also known as the Day of the Joining of Nicoya, this date marks a special moment in 1824. During that year, the people of the Nicoya region chose to become part of Costa Rica instead of Nicaragua. It was not just a political choice. Instead, it was a vote for peace and closer cultural ties.

Parades and Traditions

Today, Guanacaste Day is a celebration of that historic choice. It honors everything that makes this region so unique. Here in Nosara, the day is full of energy. For example, local schools prepare for weeks leading up to the event.

Dancing and Music

During the festival, you will see traditional dances like the Punto Guanacasteco performed in full costume. Furthermore, there are parades through town with proud cowboys on horseback. You will also see many kids dressed in the blue, white, and red colors of the flag.

Music plays a big part too, especially the cheerful sounds of the marimba. This is the national instrument of Costa Rica. As the rhythms float through the air, the whole town gets into the spirit. Consequently, the atmosphere becomes very festive and welcoming.

The Flavors of Guanacaste

Like any good celebration, Guanacaste Day is centered around the table. Throughout town, you will find people selling homemade rosquillas (corn cookies) and tamal asado. You can also try chorreadas (corn pancakes), fresh tortillas, and cajetas (sweet treats).

These traditional dishes are simple and full of local flavor. In addition, they are very comforting and represent the heart of the region. Most of these recipes have been passed down for many generations.

Join the Celebration

If your visit to Sendero falls during this time, you should take the chance to join in. Whether you watch a school show or sample a fresh tortilla, you will feel the community vibes. Guanacaste Day offers a deeper link to the local culture.
