Community Spotlight: Costas Verdes’ Reforestation of Playa Guiones

Let’s highlight the incredible local non-profit, Costas Verdes, and their successful reforestation efforts to restore the Nosara beaches’ ecosystem.

Nosara is known for its lush beaches and vibrant landscapes. Here, nature plays an integral role in our community’s well-being. The community is dedicated to preserving the surrounding greenery, which makes it a haven for residents and tourists alike, and even more so for our wildlife and the natural ecosystem.

Nonprofits like Costas Verdes have given the community so much to be thankful for.

What is Costas Verdes?

Costas Verdes (Green Coasts) is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring coastal ecosystems that have been impacted by human activities. Their reforestation efforts have been helping beach communities since 2009.

Since launching, they have worked with over 27 beaches and communities and more than 33 local schools. They have planted over 85,000 trees and reintroduced 92 species to the ecosystem. They also run four nurseries where they protect and nurture seeds until they are ready to be planted.

The organization works in Playa Guiones, Nosara, and Playa Hermosa, Garabito. They conduct tree and planting tours in Nosara. Click here to just see a glimpse of what they have accomplished in their time in Nosara.

Nosara as an Eco-Friendly Community

Nosara is a haven for surfers, outdoor enthusiasts, and yogis. People often visit to be surrounded nature and take in the Costa Rican food and culture. We want our community to know that it is an effort and takes a village to preserve this precious ecosystem and culture, and we want to put a spotlight on Costas Verdes for their work in doing so. Their efforts have not only reforested the beaches, and in doing so, also helped preserve the local flora and fauna.

Nosara is located within the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, so while there are a few aspects of “city life” in Nosara, like shops and restaurants, the buildings are limited to small-scale developments. Being a part of the refuge also means that no business or building can be within 200 meters of the beach, which contributes to Nosara’s pristine atmosphere. Businesses and residents come together to ensure their community offers a safe space to connect with nature and find peace.

Nosara – Costas Verdes Partnership

Costas Verdes partners with the Nosara community to restore and preserve its beaches through tree-planting initiatives.

Trees are such an important part of environmental health. They protect the beaches from erosion due to wind and water. Decades ago, Nosara area was deforested for cattle use, threatening the natural ecosystems. Thanks to Costas Verdes’ efforts, Nosara beaches are well on their way to restoring the coastal habitat to make it a welcoming environment for diverse animal and plant species.

Costas Verdes does so much more than plant trees. They raise awareness, allowing visitors and residents to take part in nature preservation. They are a vital part of Nosara’s community.
