When you step into the untamed beauty of Nosara, Costa Rica, it’s not just the breathtaking views that leave an impression—there’s also a captivating symphony of sounds that fills the air, impossible to ignore.

From howler monkeys to the chirping of cicadas, the sounds around Sendero Hotel are part of what makes Nosara so unforgettable. Here’s a guide to the most common noises you’ll hear during your stay.

1. Howler Monkeys: The Jungle’s Roar
When the day breaks and the jungle starts to wake up, you’ll probably hear them first—howler monkeys. Known for their deep, guttural howls, these primates can be heard from miles away. Their calls are a powerful sound, meant to mark their territory and communicate with others in the group. While they might sound a little intimidating, these monkeys are harmless and love to hang out in the treetops around Sendero.

You’ll probably even spot them swinging from the branches as they move from tree to tree, adding an extra dose of magic to the jungle’s symphony.

2. Cicadas: Nature’s Nighttime Buzz
Cicadas are the soundtrack of Nosara’s warm evenings. Their constant, rhythmic buzzing can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it’s a sound that signals the jungle’s health and vitality. The sound may get louder as dusk falls, creating a calming, almost meditative hum in the background.

3. Geckos: Tiny Creatures, Big Noise
You might not see them, but you’ll definitely hear them. Geckos, especially the common house gecko, are known for their high-pitched, chirping calls, which you may hear throughout the night. These little creatures are experts at keeping the insect population in check, so they’re welcome guests around town. Their chirps are not only charming but a reminder that nature is doing its job in the background.

4. Waves: The Constant Rhythm of the Ocean
At Sendero, the sound of the waves crashing on Playa Guiones is never far away. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet moment on your room’s outdoor sofa or hanging by the pool, the rhythmic sound of the ocean is just steps away. The waves are part of what makes Nosara, Costa Rica such a peaceful place—there’s something calming about the steady beat of the surf that translates to the tranquil rhythm of town as well.

5. Birds: Morning Calls to Wake You Up
Though the jungle soundtrack can often be a night-time experience, the morning is filled with birdsong. Wake up early enough, and you’ll hear the calls of tropical birds, like toucans and parrots, greeting the day. These bright and lively calls are an uplifting way to start your morning, and with the trees surrounding Sendero, you’re likely to spot some of these colorful creatures while enjoying breakfast. Our personal favorite is the mott mott – keep your eyes, and ears, open!

If you’re staying with us at Sendero, make sure to take a moment to really listen. The sounds of Nosara are as much a part of the experience as the sights, smells, and tastes. So next time you’re lying in bed or walking along the beach, take a deep breath and close your eyes.
